The last member of a remote uncontacted tribe has died in the Amazon after resisting communication for decades. The mysterious man known as 'Man of the Hole' passed away with his body surrounded by feathers. He spends decades living in isolation in Brazil and avoiding all attempts at contact from the outside world, shooting arrows at people who came too close and laying traps. He was called the 'Man of the Hole' because he spent much of his life digging pits to shelter in and trap animals. Officials at FUNAI, Brazil's National indigenous Foundation, believe that illegal ranchers killed off the rest of his tribe in the 1980s by giving them rat poison after initially leaving gifts of sugar. He was thought to be the sole survivor.

A FUNAI official who monitored the man from afar, found him dead in a hammock surrounded by brightly colored feathers.  This led researchers to believe that he knew he was going to die. Indigenous land in the Amazon is under constant threat from mining, ranching and deforestation and invasions have soared under President Jair Bolsonaro.
