Why Patients Are Traveling to China for Advanced Cancer Treatment

Michael Walters, a 25-year-old New Zealander with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, achieved complete remission after receiving CAR-T(Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) therapy in China when earlier treatments had failed. He chose China largely because the treatment was significantly more affordable than any option he found elsewhere. Josh Bronkhorst traveled to Shanghai after conventional treatment for his stomach cancer failed. After  receiving CAR-T therapy, the fluid buildup associated with his cancer stopped. Lower costs and access to newer treatments are making China an increasingly attractive option for cancer patients from various countries, including the United States.

What Exactly Is CAR-T?

CAR-T, or chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, uses a patient’s own immune system as the weapon. Doctors collect T cells from the patient’s blood, genetically modify them in a lab so they can recognize a specific cancer target, multiply them, and then return them to the patient’s body. The treatment has been particularly important for certain blood cancers, including some leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma.

Why Is CAR-T So Expensive in the U.S.?

According to The Wall Street Journal, CAR-T treatment costs roughly $550,000 to $850,000 in the United States, compared with about $150,000 to $230,000 in China. The gap isn’t simply the price of a drug. CAR-T is a personalized treatment: The patient’s own cells are collected, modified, multiplied, tested for safety, and then returned to the same patient. The process requires specialized medical teams and close monitoring because serious complications can occur.

Why Is China Becoming Competitive?

China has developed a major CAR-T research and manufacturing base, with many clinical trials underway. Its regulators have approved nine CAR-T products, more than any other country. China has also established specialized hospitals for international patients. Shanghai’s SinoUnited Hospital says it has treated more than 30 international CAR-T patients from 12 countries since launching its program in 2023. The hospital provides English-language services, visa assistance, and specialist medical teams. It has also seen growing interest from patients in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

China Expands CAR-T Therapy Beyond Blood Cancer

For years, CAR-T worked almost exclusively against blood cancers, since solid tumors are far harder for engineered immune cells to locate and penetrate. That changed in June 2026, when China’s National Medical Products Administration approved satri-cel, for certain patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal-junction cancer, becoming the world’s first CAR-T therapy approved for a solid tumor. For some patients, China now offers access to a treatment that simply doesn’t exist yet anywhere else. The first international patient to receive satri-cel was a 59-year-old man from New Zealand, who traveled to Shanghai after chemotherapy and immunotherapy failed.

The Risks and Challenges of CAR-T Therapy 

CAR-T can cause serious side effects, including cytokine release syndrome, which brings fever, dangerously low blood pressure, and breathing difficulty, along with possible neurological complications. Traveling abroad for such complex treatment also has practical risks. Patients may need long hospital stays and regular follow-up after returning home. There are also concerns about the transparency of some clinical trials in China’s fast-growing biotechnology sector. However, international hospitals usually offer foreign patients approved treatments rather than experimental trials.
