Choosing a university for biological sciences in Pakistan is not as simple as looking at overall reputation. Global ranking systems evaluate universities by specific subjects, and their results can differ from general university rankings. So, which Pakistani universities actually stand out for biological sciences?
This list compares two major global ranking systems: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities for Biology and Biochemistry and the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2026). The two systems use different methods and subject categories. U.S. News focuses on research performance, including publications, citations, and international collaboration, while QS considers factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, and citations.
1. Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad
Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) has a strong position in Pakistan’s biological sciences, particularly for research. Its Faculty of Biological Sciences includes separate departments covering areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, environmental sciences, microbiology, plant sciences, zoology, and bioinformatics. This gives students access to a wide range of biological research areas.
QAU’s research strength is also reflected in international rankings. In the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, it is ranked #347 globally for Biology and Biochemistry, placing it ahead of the other Pakistani universities included in this comparison. For students, this ranking is useful because it reflects the university’s research performance in biological sciences, including factors such as research publications and citations. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, QAU is placed in the 201–250 range for Natural Sciences, a broader category that includes several science disciplines.
Admission Procedure:
QAU accepts undergraduate applications online. For its Fall 2026 BS admissions, applicants could apply with an HSSC Part-I or complete result, with at least 50% marks in HSSC Part-I for the listed biological-science programs. The university waived the HEC USAT requirement for the 2026 BS cycle.
Timeline & Preparation:
QAU states that undergraduate admissions normally begin around June for the Fall semester. The Fall 2026 BS application deadline was August 10, 2026. Students preparing for QAU should maintain strong HSSC marks, check the subject requirements for their chosen program, and keep their academic documents ready before applications open.
2. University of Agriculture, Faisalabad
The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) has a strong focus on biological sciences through its work in agriculture, plant sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, and related fields. Its biological sciences programs are closely connected to applied research, particularly in areas such as crop improvement, plant health, food science, and agricultural biotechnology.
This research focus is reflected in UAF’s international rankings. It ranks #514 globally for Biology and Biochemistry in the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, indicating a strong research presence in biological sciences. UAF also performs strongly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for Agriculture & Forestry, a subject closely related to its strengths in plant sciences, biotechnology, and agricultural research. For students interested in these areas, the rankings provide additional evidence of UAF’s research-oriented profile.
Admission Procedure:
UAF conducts undergraduate admissions through its online admission portal. Applicants register using their own email and CNIC/B-Form, complete the admission process online, and participate in the university’s entrance-test where applicable. UAF’s 2026–27 admissions included programs such as B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology, BS Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, and Botany.
Timeline & Preparation:
UAF held its first undergraduate entrance test on July 5, 2026, followed by a second on August 2, and a third on August 30. Students planning to apply should therefore begin monitoring UAF’s admissions page by June, prepare for the entrance test in advance, and keep their application documents ready.
3. COMSATS University, Islamabad
COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has developed a broad STEM-focused research environment, with biological sciences forming part of its wider work in science and technology. Its research in areas such as biotechnology, bioinformatics, microbiology, and molecular biology connects biological sciences with computing, engineering, and other technical disciplines.
CUI ranks #524 globally for Biology and Biochemistry in the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, reflecting its research presence in the biological sciences. Its broader STEM profile is also recognized in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where it appears in several fields, including Computer Science and Engineering. For students, this makes CUI particularly relevant to those interested in biological sciences within a broader STEM-focused environment.
Admission Procedure:
COMSATS accepts undergraduate applications online. For BS Biosciences, applicants must meet the program’s academic requirements and have a NAT score of at least 50%. The university also provides on-campus entry-test opportunities. Students should check the admission notice for the relevant campus and intake because testing arrangements can vary.
Timeline & Preparation:
For Fall 2026 at the Islamabad campus, applications opened before the July 8 deadline, with the first merit list scheduled for July 28 and classes beginning on September 7. Several NTS and on-campus test dates were available in June and July. Students should therefore begin NAT preparation several months before admissions open and aim well above the 50% minimum.
4. University of the Punjab, Lahore
The University of the Punjab (PU) has one of the country’s longest-established academic and research traditions, with biological sciences taught across several departments and disciplines. Its programs and research cover areas such as biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, zoology, botany, and molecular biology.
PU ranks #601 globally for Biology and Biochemistry in the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, reflecting its research activity and international presence in the biological sciences. Moreover, the broad academic environment gives students opportunities to explore different areas of biological science and pursue research across related disciplines.
Admission Procedure:
Punjab University accepts undergraduate applications online only. For the 2026–27 cycle, the application portal was open from July 2 to August 4, 2026. The university’s centralized undergraduate admission test carries 25% weightage for non-engineering programs, making the test relevant for applicants to biological-science programs.
Timeline & Preparation:
Punjab University’s centralized entry test was held on June 14, 2026, before the main application period. Students planning to apply should therefore prepare for the admission test before summer, shortlist their preferred biological-science programs and check each program’s specific eligibility requirements before submitting an application.
5. Government College University, Faisalabad
Government College University, Faisalabad (GCUF) rounds out the top five, ranking #630 globally for Biology and Biochemistry in the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings. The university offers biological sciences across areas including biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, botany, and zoology, with research connected to health, agriculture, and environmental sciences.
Its inclusion in the U.S. News subject ranking highlights the university’s contribution to biological sciences research at the international level, despite having a smaller global profile than some of the other universities on this list.
Admission Procedure:
GCUF uses an online admission system. Applicants create an account, enter their personal and academic information, upload a photograph, select their programs, review the application, and pay the fee voucher. Importantly, GCUF’s current admission portal states that its university admission test is compulsory for Engineering, Technologies, and Fine Arts, rather than all undergraduate programs.
Timeline & Preparation:
For Fall 2026–27, GCUF’s online application deadline was September 28, 2026. The university scheduled admission tests and interviews for selected categories on September 29. Students should check whether their specific program requires a test, prepare accordingly, and complete the online application well before the deadline.
What Students Can Do to Prepare
Students should start researching universities and programs several months before admissions open. January to April is a good period to shortlist programs and prepare for NAT or university-specific tests, while May onward is the time to regularly check official admission portals. Keeping transcripts, certificates, photographs, CNIC/B-Form, and equivalence documents ready can also prevent delays. Most importantly, students should always check the latest official admission notice for their specific program, as eligibility requirements, tests, and deadlines can change each year.
