Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, on Thursday, October 8.

Patekar was found unconscious at his home in the early hours of the morning and was taken to Manipal Hospital. Doctors attempted to revive him with CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be saved. He was declared dead at approximately 5:20 a.m., according to hospital sources. His son, Malhar Patekar, also confirmed his death.

The actor’s death marks the loss of one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive performers. Known for his intense screen presence, powerful dialogue delivery, and ability to portray complex characters, Patekar built a career spanning nearly five decades across Hindi and Marathi cinema.

A Career Spanning Nearly Five Decades

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, Nana Patekar began his career in theatre before making his film debut with Gaman in 1978. He went on to gain wider recognition through films such as Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, and Khamoshi: The Musical.

His performances earned him three National Film Awards, while his contribution to Indian cinema was recognised with the Padma Shri in 2013. He later reached a wider mainstream audience through films including Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Rajneeti, and Welcome. His portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome also introduced his distinctive acting style to a new generation of viewers.

Patekar also worked as a director and theatre artist, and remained involved in social causes outside the film industry. He co-founded the Naam Foundation, which works on issues including support for farmers and water conservation.

Tributes Follow His Death

News of Patekar’s death has prompted tributes from across the Indian film industry and political leadership. His contribution to theatre and cinema has been widely recognised, with Maharashtra’s government announcing that he will be accorded a state funeral in Pune.

Nana Patekar leaves behind a body of work that spans serious drama, action, social films, and comedy. His distinctive voice, intense performances and long-standing presence in Hindi and Marathi cinema made him one of India’s most recognizable actors.
