Introduction: Fatima Jinnah Women University - Empowering Women in Rawalpindi

Located in the bustling centre of Rawalpindi near Katcheri Chowk at the Mall Road, Saddar, Fatima Jinnah Women University is a public sector women only institution that has been providing quality higher education and ensuring women empowerment since August 1998. The university does not boast a grand entryway despite its multiple gates and a beautiful wall adorned with cultural pictures that stretches along the Mall Road. You could drive past the main gate and almost miss the university except for a number of vehicles parked outside in the parking lot. The gates facing the Mall Road are closed permanently due to security reasons and only two gates facing the road that goes towards Marir Chowk are kept open.

Entry is granted only after showing your student ID card. In case you’re a visitor, you’ll have to submit your NIC and state the purpose of visit to the security guards to the right of Gate 1. Not all visitors are allowed to enter, so they are directed towards the window office to the left of Gate 2 for requesting information.

Cultural Hub and Co-curricular Activities

The university, commonly known as FJ among the students, is also a cultural hub as students from all regions of Pakistan are present under one roof. They engage in various co-curricular activities to promote cooperation and interaction. The FJWU anthem, released at the Silver Jubilee of the university, is an indicator of the university’s enthusiastic and progressive spirit. FJWU anthem is available online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roiKnUUUXqw

The Entrepreneurial Fair and Book Fair are held annually with great fervor. Both intra-university and inter-university Declamation and Debate contests are also conducted for which notices are displayed on student noticeboards.

Sports

Along with this, sports are played in the available facilities for badminton, lawn tennis, squash and volleyball. In addition to this, the exposure of students to the outside world is enhanced by arranging guest lectures and events by collaborating with other organizations. The Susan B. Anthony Reading Room (SBARR) in the library and the Women Research and Resource Centre (WRRC) also regularly arrange interactive sessions.

The university also organizes a number of seminars and conferences for the enlightenment of researchers, students and faculty alike. Participation in these activities as student organizers, audience and participants greatly improves one’s knowledge, expertise and practical skills. The Alumni Office also arranges events for alumni now and then to expand the network of FJWU graduates.

Academic Life: A Busy Schedule of Learning and Growth

Normally, the students remain busy during the four- month long semester in classes, completing assignments, projects, taking quizzes, midterms and final exams. In their free time girls lounge around the cafeteria, or hover around the printing, photocopy, food and gift shops or simply recline and frolic under the shade of trees and greenery in the sprawling lawn in front of the Old Presidency building. Students also frequent the library and internet lab for reading up and working on assignments. Normally, the timings are from 8-4 or till 5:30 in some departments. Most day scholars commute daily through vans which are easily available right outside the gates of FJ to provide pick and drop services on monthly charges.

Transport and Hostel Facilities: Convenience for Students

Students can also avail university bus services by contacting the transport office. Those availing the hostel facility must mention at the time of admission if they require university accommodation.
